Demo Derby

Demolition Derby

It was a cooler day today but the excitement at the track kept us all warm. Today, September 13th, 2014 was the Kingdom Demolition Derby at Red River Co-op Speedway, and Becky’s boyfriend Adam was a driver. It was the first time I’d been to a demolition derby, and it was a cool experience.

There were some pretty intense collisions, with a high percentage of them coming from the few women that drove in the event. It was amazing that some of the cars were even able to move after some of the abuse they took

One car even had its back end smashed in to past its rear tires (which were seized) and somehow it made it to the end of its heat.

Adams car took some serious abuse in a few crashes and didn’t last the heat, but he had a great time and it was a lot of fun for us all.

Another Summer Gone

Its hard to believe another summer has come and gone, but the signs are all there. Football has started, hockey is right around the corner, the days are noticeably shorter, and the weather cooler – well cold as of tonight. While after last winter I was determined to not spend another winter in Winnipeg, sometimes things don’t work out according to out plans and desires.

That said it has been a good year with lots of progress. My leg is continuing to improve, work is going well, and both kids have started on their their post secondary educations after a brief hiatus. Maybe I’m not holding a Royal Flush, but there’s nothing wrong with a full house!

R&R Mexican Style

I’m back from a couple weeks in the Mayan and its funny just how a couple weeks back into the grind can make such a great escape seem like a distant memory. The weather hasn’t helped. Its been the 3rd coldest winter here in Winnipeg in the last century. I guess without experiencing some pain we wouldn’t know what pleasure is like – at least that’s what I’ll keep telling myself.

The trip to the Mayan was nice this year as I went with a buddy from work and we rented a condo. I had a relative join us the second week, and we had 4 other friends down there at the time – a couple vacationing, and two friends that live in Playa Del Carmen. It was nice to always have people that were around and up for doing something.

After have been several times over the past few years, I found I didn’t really take the camera out as much and enjoyed it more from the point of returning to a comfortable surrounding as opposed to one where every scene was new.

That said it was a great time to recharge and I can’t wait to start planning my next get away!

San Francisco

Sometimes business and pleasure collides. That was the case this past October when I had the luxury of attending Oracle Open World in San Francisco. It was my first time to San Fran, and its a place I really want to return to.

The conference and the people I attended with kept things pretty busy, so there wasn’t as much time to see the city and enjoy the sights as I’d have hoped, but I took advantage of it where I could.

The weather was simply amazing. Barely a cloud in the sky the entire week, and I was also lucky enough to take in a 49ers game against the Colts – the game wasn’t great but the experience sure was.

I took an extra week and drove the California coast into Oregon and Washington on my way to Vancouver for my flight back home. Here the weather wasn’t as good and there was a fair bit of rain, but I can’t say enough about the beauty of the coastline. Its something I’d recommend everyone see, or at least add to your bucket list!

Looking for lunch

Another long weekend in the books in 2013. Its hard to believe where the time has been going. I think for me part of it is being mobile enough to get back our and enjoy the outdoors. While the weather hasn’t been fantastic, it hasn’t been terrible either. Lots of sun mixed with lots of rain and cooler weather. I trust this will make the farmers happy at least. Sunday morning was nice and sunny ahead of afternoon showers, so I headed out to Lockport to watch a good crowd fishing and the birds feeding.
